about

Friends' third album, released in 1991, continues where Roads Leading Everywhere left off. Whilst the title isn't strictly truthful, the songs are generally gloriously optimistic and summery, with standout tracks like the childhood nostalgia of Out In The Open and On A Day Like This mixing with more reflective numbers such as Fadeaway and Thinking Of You. Dominated by acoustic guitars and trumpet, Songs Without Tears is in the same musical area as Lightning Seeds or Pale Fountains, and isn't afraid to rock out when required. Songs Without Tears has been one of the most sought-after Friends albums since its release and marks the end of the 'early' Friends phase of its original line-up and own-produced recordings. Classic English romantic pop that stands the test of time while being highly characteristic of its early 90s era.

Track Name: On A Day Like This
On a day like this
Darkness broken, come alive
On a day like this
Suddenly my sleepy eyes are open wide
Being here is all I could wish

On a day like this
Gentle wind and clear ahead
When I feel like this
We could reach the mountains in a single step
These are the moments you’ve missed

Reach to the blue sky
Harder now, higher now
Walk through the sunshine
Farther now, brighter now
If it ends today
Don’t take this moment away

Just a touch of your golden hair
And it’s gone

One a day like this
Everything I need to say
Is in one blind kiss
Everlasting summertime begins today
Feel it as long as you live

Just an hour in your gentle arms
And it’s gone, oh yeah now it’s gone

Run through the long grass
Follow me, stay with me
Climb through the high clouds
Come with me, be with me
Give me one last wish
Just one more moment like this
If today was bliss
Find it wherever it is

Track Name: Fadeaway
Memories inside my head
Coloured in with frozen blue and burning red
Crystal clear or faded scenes
Wide awake or slipping in and out of dreams

Long gone in a winter haze
Slowly to fade away

Every time I dream I’ve found it
Try to close my arms around it
Feel it slip away for ever
Long to draw it back together
All the times that I remember
Calling through the days
Fadeaway

Faces that I used to know
Places that I used to go have disappeared
Voices from the distant past
Echo down the years to haunt me here at last

Far, far from a life that’s gone for ever
Feel all of it fade away

Every time I dream I’ve found it
Try to close my arms around it
Feel it slip away for ever
Long to draw it back together
All the times that I remember
Calling through the days

And every now and then I try
To recreate those distant years
When every moment seemed a lifetime
Now it’s long forgotten
Here in a changing world
I lie beside this winding river
Why should I ever wake again?

Every time I dream I’ve found it
Try to close my arms around it
Feel it slip away for ever
Long to draw it back together

Everything is part of me and
All of me is part of all of this
Every sound and every colour
All the pain and all the pleasure
Even dreams that I remembered only yesterday
Fadeaway

Track Name: Live For The Day
Once I took a look at my life
Gave up living in the past
Started living in the present day
As if every hour was the last

No way of planning for the future
Who knows how I’ll feel next year?
Any day the time is always now
And the place must always be here

Live for the day
Don’t think about tomorrow
Go my own way
Forget about the past
Do what I say
Instead of what I’m thinking
And find myself at last

One day I can look around me
I’ll be proud of what I’ve done
I will treasure every single day
Because it’s over before it’s begun

I’ll float away
Leave everybody drowning
How do I feel?
I’m doing very well
I’ll get away
Not even think of staying
And everybody else can go to hell

I’ll sing a song
That no-one else is singing
The road’s so long
I’ve come so very far
Pray I’ll be gone
When wedding bells are ringing
Leave everybody standing where they are

Track Name: Without Tears
Thinking of you when time was cheap
As far as I know you’re still there
Asleep in a world that no-one knows
Open your eyes, get up and go

Wake up, wake up, won’t you give it a chance
Throw it away, in another day you can’t remember
Look at your life in a different way
Look at it change as you just begin to say what you want
What you feel

Open eyes and open feelings
Hidden joys and hidden meanings
Without tears and without heartache
Leaving fear behind you now

Never chase the rain away
Never see the sun every day
Never chase the rain away
Never see the sun every day

This is the choice that you can make
This is the chance before it’s too late
And it’s gone and won’t return
Do it today, a hit and run

This is your life and it’s going so fast
This is your life, does it really want to pass in silence?
Would you rather be happy, would you rather be sad?
Because it’s all in your power if you’ll only hold your hand to take it
To make it

Open eyes and open feelings
Hidden joys and hidden meanings
Without tears and without heartache
Leaving fear behind you now

Never chase the rain away
Never see the sun every day
Never chase the rain away
Never see the sun every day
Ever seen the sky at night?
Ever the seen the pale morning light?

Open eyes and open feelings
Hidden joys and hidden meanings
Without tears and without heartache
Leaving fear behind you now

Suddenly I realised, a single flash before my eyes
Where naked truth and naked lies
Go over and over and round and around and

Look at you now, can you see what I see?
As soon as you take the responsibility for your life
I’m talking to you, will you tell me the truth
I believe in you now that you’ve finally the faith in yourself
For yourself

Open eyes and open feelings
Hidden joys and hidden meanings
Without tears and without heartache
Leaving fear behind you now

Never chase the rain away
Never see the sun every day
Never chase the rain away
Never see the sun every day

Track Name: Thinking Of You
I never understand the years of silence
The hurt that all this bitterness can do
The feelings I could never kill by hiding
It took so long to find a way to you

However many times the path was open
I only heard the sound of closing doors
A word so often thought but never spoken
I meant it then but now I mean it more
Through all the years it’s you I waited for

Dreaming that it’s better here without you
When all the time I wonder where you are

Here where the sun can never shine
Here where the daylight never finds
In the street light’s gloom
In a cold barren room
Every time I raise my head
I’m thinking of you

I’ll never say this solitude was worth it
Till we can be together without pain
And now I know what took me so long learning
Whatever happens happens anyway
There’s nothing left to think about or say

Hard enough to lose what we had longed for
And harder still to lie here and forget

Here where the memories never sleep
Here where the world will never reach
In a heartless town
With its face looking down
Every time I hold myself
I’m thinking of you

Here where the sun can never shine
Here where the daylight never finds
In the street light’s gloom
In a cold barren room
Every time I close my eyes
I’m thinking of you
I’m dreaming of you
I’m thinking of you
And only of you

Track Name: Round And Around
The more I say the less I mean
Feels like I’m spinning in a circle
Feels like I’m turning in a wheel

You never heard a single word
I might as well have never said it
You might be better on your own
I want to be alone

Round and around for ever
And it’s over and over now

Round and around and
Round and around and
Round and around and
Round and around and
Will it ever end?
Here we go again

I often dream what might have been
Not that I ever really knew you
Not that I ever really tried
Just run away and hide
I’ll throw away my pride

Round and around and
Round and around and
Round and around and
Round and around and
Will it ever end?
Here we go again
Will it ever end?
Here we go again

Track Name: Out In The Open
You and I, out in the open
Climbing high, dreaming and hoping
You and I, silently roaming
Touch the sky, reach the horizon
Paradise could only be a breath away
Another gentle breath away
Somewhere we will meet again one day

Born here with you
The open hills our secret garden
Lifelong we’d stay
The way that we were then
Long years we grew
From perfect friends to distant strangers
Still we can try
To bring it back again

I’m calling, I’m calling to you

You and I, out in the open
Gliding by, drifting and floating
You and I, nobody knowing
Where or why our future was going
Today already seems a million miles away
Another distant world away
Tomorrow’s softly calling out my name

Though far apart
Those distant days now long forgotten
Time told me now
I’m coming home again

It’s over, I know now, I’m with you at last

You and I, out in the open
High and wide, sky never broken
You and I, chasing a rainbow
Day and night, where did the time go?
My destiny could only be a step away
Another easy step away
Maybe it’s already here today

Long winters gone into
Glorious springtime
I still can remember the way

You and I, the way we had chosen
Side by side, a memory frozen
You and I, out in the open
Hold that smile just for a moment
Paradise was only one more day away
Another lonely day away
Paradise was only ever one more step away
It’s just a final step away
Finally it’s here in me today

Track Name: Don't Need It Any More
Believe me, believe me when I say
That I was just like anyone
And still could be today

A child still, with so much left to learn
You’ll have to try to teach yourself
There’s nowhere else to turn

You might as well accept it now
The shit around you here
Take it away

Remember, before it grinds you down
There’s no place here for tenderness
So get out while you can

The never-changing quiet nights
The boredom of the day
Throw it away

And you can take your world away
Don’t need it any more
I’m going to leave it any day
Don’t need it any more

I found you, I don’t remember how
But brother I’m in trouble here
And Christ I need you now

You showed me
Called me by my name
To throw aside my heavy load
Or carry round this pain

The sound of thunder in my head
The whole world at my door
Take it away

And you can take your world away
Don’t need it any more
And I could leave it any day
Don’t need it any more

And all the hatred in my heart
Don’t need it any more
And every bitterness I had
Don’t need it any more

And all the envy that I felt
Don’t feel it any more
And all the nightmares in my life
Don’t dream them any more

Never never never never
Never never never ever
Ever ever ever
No I’m never going to need it any more

Track Name: Primrose Hill
Twenty years away
I see those moments just as
Clear as yesterday
I could as well be there again

Far as I can see
The city skyline reaches
Years away from me
I know these memories will
Still keep me warm
When all around me is frozen

It’s here in my heart
And still feels the same
I’m back at the start
Every day, every day

Hold on and never let it go
Reach for a world that’s mine alone
Crystal mornings, hazy evenings
Close my eyes and I could be there still
Back on Primrose Hill

Rushing through the years
A moving train from where
The view is never clear
However hard I stare
I’m moving onwards
Ever onwards
Faster all the time
Looking backwards
Into darkness
A disappearing line

Easy still to find
The places I once knew
And marks I left behind
In endless days when I’d just
Lie in the grass
And feel the world spinning round me

It’s here with me now
And always will stay
Step out of that crowd
Get away, get away

Hold on and never let it go
Reach for a world that’s mine alone
Winter mornings, autumn evenings
Every day of every season
Never gone and never will
I close my eyes and I could be there still
Back on Primrose Hill
Up on Primrose Hill
High on Primrose Hill
There on Primrose Hill
Back on Primrose Hill

Track Name: Never-Ending Journey
Paths ahead
Reach before my eyes
Meet the open skies
There we are led

Hard the road
Harder grows my heart
Ever from the start
Of my life
And I’ll stay all the way anyway

Never-ending journey
Ever-winding roads to nowhere
Ever-changing shadows in the sun
And I can’t stay for ever
And I shan’t waste another day
Don’t say it’s over
It’s only just begun

Far behind
Way beyond the sun
The endless steps we’ve come
Fade back in time

Like a bird
Beckoned from the night
Through the warm and light
To the dark

I will fly, I will die
Without fear, without tears

Never-ending journey
Ever-winding roads to nowhere
Ever-changing shadows in the sun
And I can’t stay for ever
And I shan’t waste another day
Don’t say it’s over
It’s only just begun

Now it’s just a memory
A vision fading fast
Nothing here was ever meant to last
Never last

Never-ending journey
Ever-winding roads to nowhere
Ever-changing shadows in the sun
And I can’t stay for ever
And I shan’t waste another day
Don’t say it’s over
It’s only just begun

Track Name: My Only Chance
There’s a hundred shattered dreams
In every street of every town I’ve ever been
A single opportunity
To win or lose, to make or break, to take or leave

I’ll stay till the end
And I will say it again
Until it’s true, until it’s true

Give me back my only chance
And I will never let it go again
Give me back my only chance
And I will never let it go again
Hold on, never let it go again

You and I both know, my friend
That all you’ll ever do is stay in this dead end
Time will take the pain away
But nothing can relieve the sadness of decay

You know how it hurts
So please don’t tell me the worst
Unless it’s true, unless it’s true

Give me back my only chance
And I will never let it go again
Give me back my only chance
And I will never let it go again
Hold on, never let it go again
Hold on, never let it go again

Give me back my only chance
And I will never let it go again
Give me back my only chance
And I will never let it go again
Give me back my only dream
And I will never let it go again
Give me back my only chance
And I will never let it go again
Hold on, never let it go again
Hold on, never let it go again
Hold on, never let it go again

Track Name: Side By Side
When I’m down, when I’m lost and low
Still I can hear you calling
Come in from the cold

When you shout, and you can’t be heard
Catching you through the crowd
I still hear every word

And I’ll be with you tonight

When it’s dark, and you’re all alone
Give me your frozen hand
And I will lead you home

When it’s hard
And you’re reaching high
Conquer your fear of falling
You can touch the sky

And that’s a promise to you
It’s for a lifetime with you

Side by side, we’ll break the darkest night
Side by side, we’ll reach the morning light
Through the wind and driving rain
Through the joy and through the pain
Stand together just the same
At the end

When you’re right, and the world is wrong
Feeling you lean on me
I’m with you all along

When you give, with no demands
Waking again you’ll find me lying in your arms

I will remember today
Now and forever this way

Side by side, we’ll stand against the tide
Side by side, we’re reaching far and wide
And the journey’s been so long
And it’s hard to carry on
When so many years have gone, to the end

Side by side, we’ll hold our hands with pride
Side by side, the gates are open wide
And however far apart
Be together here at last
Through whatever storms have passed
As a friend
